The Forestry major at UGA is regarded as one of the top five forestry programs in the country. It is the only 4-year degree program in Georgia accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and meets the educational requirements for the SAF Certified Forester credential. The curriculum provides a sound understanding of forest ecosystems, the different worldviews and utilization of the forest, and management tools and concepts applied in forest conservation. Students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on field experience, teamwork, problem analysis, and an active internship program. Within the major, students choose from several areas of emphasis: Forest Management, Forest Business, Forest Recreation, Forest Biology, Urban Forestry, Forest Policy, or Wood Products.

A passing score on the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE) is required for certification. Additional jobs are available as paraprofessionals, behavior interventionists, and office managers in kindergarten and preschool settings.

Culture Values and Ethics Shana S

Hand built with passion and care in the sea to sky corridor, may seem like a new kid on the block for boutique skis but founder and builder Greg Funk has been building skis for years. Greg is like the rest of us, a ripping skier who loves to be out in the mountains and wants to ride on great skis. The difference is Greg has taken matters into his own hands and has the skills to build them. It's fitting that I met Greg skiing, he was stoked and skiing hard. What else is there to say?

“Being a student in the agricultural leadership, education and communication department makes it extremely difficult to have only one favorite professor, because they are all so amazing in their own ways. I have had the opportunity to be their student, as well as their office assistant, and they are all totally wonderful people who are very passionate about what they teach. If I had to pick the professor I am the most thankful for getting to know it would be my magnificent advisor, Frank B. Flanders. He is an assistant professor in the ALEC department with an emphasis in agricultural education. He is overly qualified for his roles and executes them superiorly. Dr. Flanders has an array of degrees and accomplishments, and he has served in agricultural education for over 35 years. He is a remarkable advisor, friend and role model. Thank you Dr. Flanders for all you have done and continue to do to guide me toward success here at UGA.”

“Research and instruction are inseparable parts of the process of higher education. As I conduct research and develop technologies, I keep up with and contribute to the new developments in my field. I can then convey these ideas to students, sharing my experiences and how I have tackled different problems. At the same time, communicating this technical information gives me a deeper appreciation for where the field came from and what its current limitations are. Understanding these limitations inspires new research directions.”

In addition to core German language courses, students receive guidance from a faculty mentor to devise a curriculum geared towards specific career goals and intellectual interests. The department is comprised of specialists in the major areas of German Studies who integrate language teaching with German literature, linguistics, film, history, philosophy, and culture studies as well as important aspects of contemporary German society, business, and politics.
